HONOLULU – The State Department of Taxation is warning Hawai‘i taxpayers of a new
e-mail scam. Taxpayers are being sent a fraudulent e-mail that claims to be from the
State of Hawai‘i Department of Taxation informing them they are due a tax refund.
The fraudulent e-mail requires the recipient to go to a Web site that is nearly identical to
the Tax Department’s official site to submit specific confidential information regarding
their social security number, debit card number, PIN number, and card security code.
This is a scam and anyone who receives such an email should not reply.
The Department of Taxation does NOT send taxpayers e-mails regarding tax refunds.
Its website does allow taxpayers to check on the status of their refunds; however, it
does NOT ask for taxpayers’ debit card information.
Anyone receiving such an email should report it immediately to the Department of
Taxation at 808-587-1540.
